George Lombard Jr. Homers in Memorable Yankees Debut as Brother Matches Feat
New York Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. wasted no time making his mark in the major leagues. Called up from Triple-A and starting at shortstop on Tuesday night, the 21-year-old launched a solo home run in his second career at-bat during a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium.
The blast came in the fifth inning off Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins. Facing an 0-2 count, Lombard crushed a sweeper 392 feet into the left-field seats with an exit velocity of 100.2 mph. It was his first major-league hit and gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead that held up as the final score. Jazz Chisholm Jr. had earlier homered for New York.
Lombard also impressed with the glove, turning two double plays that helped starter Ryan Weathers through six strong innings. He finished the night 1-for-2 with a walk. At 21 years and 63 days old, he became one of the youngest Yankees in decades to debut at shortstop and the first Yankees shortstop to homer in his big-league debut.
The night carried an even more special family twist. Roughly an hour earlier, George’s younger brother Jacob Lombard — the Miami Marlins’ first-round pick (14th overall) in the 2026 draft — hit a home run in his professional debut for Single-A Jupiter. Both brothers went deep in their second plate appearances, both off breaking balls, with nearly identical exit velocities and launch angles, and both facing Cardinals-affiliated teams.
Their parents, including father George Lombard Sr. (Detroit Tigers bench coach and former big-leaguer), were in the stands at Yankee Stadium and celebrated the moment together.
“This is probably a moment, a swing and a day that I won’t forget,” George Lombard Jr. said after the game.
The call-up came as the Yankees optioned Anthony Volpe to Triple-A. Lombard, long regarded as New York’s shortstop of the future and protected in recent trade deadline talks, is now expected to see significant playing time.
The performance quickly lit up X, with “Lombard” trending among sports topics alongside other MLB names. Fans and baseball accounts celebrated both the debut and the rare brotherly coincidence on the same night.
